My wife and I are fortunate enough to have a baby on the way this October! Here is a Mary Blair inspired guest book I did for the baby shower. Instead of signatures/messages we thought it would be cool if people left there thumb print to resemble a balloon. Here's the final Gouache painting at the party and my digital sketch. Still have to add a few more strings but am pretty happy with this!

Here is a vehicle im working on for fun. I am trying to get a pretty photo real for the final piece so I am taking it a bit further than usual in 3D. I also want to play with some real dramatic lighting in 3D. I usually only do a basic light setup in 3D so hopefully I will learn some cool stuff while pushing it.

Here is a personal project I have been working on. It's been really fun just to quickly work out
what's in my head and not take the fast road to render town. I have been trying to convey these thoughts with basic indications and see what I can do in a short amount of time. Since this was for me I picked two influences that helped me take an interest in art when I was younger. Skateboarding, and Heavy Metal! I am really happy with where it's at for how much time I spent. I might elaborate a little more on his character traits and texture detail but he's pretty much there. As far as the maintenance vehicle I am currently working on a color palette for him. Stay tuned!

2 Hour quicky. Speedier concepts are super fun, why haven't I done more of these lately?
Pretty fun just to design and not worry about rendering for a bit. Came up with a little story
to help drive this guy. I guess my recent concepts look kinda satanic? I'll just listen to more
Slayer to get it out of my system.

This years contribution to the lucas film animation art auction. Did something a little different, but was tons of fun. I have a new appreciation for stencil artist's. Super tedious, but totally worth it when you get some clean layers.

Lately I have been missing alla prima head studies that I did when attending the atelier. Super relaxing to just focus on shapes and forms in front of you. Also got pretty inspired seeing Sean Cheetham's new gauche studies. I usually catch shit for leaving the eyes blank until the end. Old habits die hard. When I was younger I would just render the shit out of the eyes and everything else would just fall short. I swore never to go back to that place. Hopefully throw some color on this guy soon.

Random sketch of the day. After seeing how to train your dragon I felt like painting something a bit more fantasy based. Man that movie was the $H!#! Anyway just grabbed some quick ref of forests and went at this with no idea in mind. After a little bit of sketching, a little story started to evolve. I am not to crazy about the composition but it was fun for a quicky.

I have really been getting into trans design lately. I started this a while ago but have picked it up recently and have been focusing on it's lines. I feel like I am finally happy with where this is going. The front end still remains to be unsaid but I am happy. After some good feedback at work I thought id share. After I iron out some issues I plan on taking it to paint sooner than later. More to come...

Art Auction...

Friday night my wife's work held a great art auction for aids and breast cancer. This a watercolor/gouache study I did of a 70's vader figure for it. While painting in the digital world for the last few years I have truly forgot how much fun and almost meditative traditional media is. Especially gouache. For whatever reason it pushes me to be more gestural and loose. Maybe that's because I am more focused on lighting vs. rendering? I started this piece with watercolors to block it in then brought out some of the values and colors with gouache. Here are some shots of the unframed finished painting and my simple setup.

Hopefully there will be some more gouache pieces coming up as some Plein Air sessions are in the works:)

I think I also gravitated towards this snow study because I am jones-in to get some snowboarding in this Season

Yet another study. I think I like these so much because you can just totally zone out and play with shapes, lighting, and color. I found this picture the other week and thought it was great. So many medical photos people look so depressed, but this dudes just loving life. Not to mention sweet robot arms!

Oh yea how come every time I post it lightens my darks and desaturates it a bit. I hate changes the levels every time I finish something. Does anyone else run into this?

Spent some more time on this still life. I think it's pretty much finished but might play with the lighting and color a bit more. I might take a stab at this in oils. Would like to thinley mass it in then play up the colors with washes. It has been a while since I have painted anything traditionally and never really have worked with washes so this should be fun. I am hoping to finish it for a gallery show next month, we'll see? Crits welcome!

Hey Guys, Haven't updated in a while. Here is yet another study. IMD is having an art Gallery soon so I have been working on a couple studies for the show. Thought it would be cool to do some fun studies then get them printed on some nice canvas then stretch them over a frame?

2 posts in one day? Sure why not. Just finished this dude. Have been working on this over the last few weeks 5 minutes here 10 minutes there. Done! I am really liking these quick studies. I feel or maybe hope that my colors and lighting are coming further along.

Hey Guys, Haven't updated in a while. Since I last posted I have been fortunate enough to get a job at Image Movers Digital. My life long goal has been to work on feature films so I am pretty happy to say the least. I am a production assistant in the art department. Everyone here has been great and are very willing to answer any questions. We are wrapping on A Christmas Carol right now. I think it might be a pleasant surprise. The shots look pretty great, so go see it when it comes out! More to come. In the mean time here is a quick study I have done.

Here is a final version of my out skirts station. As I am gearing my work towards film I am trying to bridge the gap between photo real and a more painterly approach. We just started a new project which I am very excited about. I will wrap up on a few more transit concepts while starting our new one, stay tuned!

So here is the final version of my Colonel character. I am pretty happy with it? I would like to noodle on this a bit more but gota move on to other things. This will be one image out of many that Massive Black will post soon from our group on conceptart.org. There will be a poll for each group for viewers to vote on. lol don't know how I feel about that but check it out, there will be alot of cool stuff! Any comments are much apprecieted on this guy.

So here is my version of the colonel character for our story. He's still pretty rough (80% done ?) but thought I would share him. I think the mechanical foot area is what needs the most work especially after some good feedback. I also started modeling it to nail the perspective. Some back story on the mechanical leg is that it was blown off in the field. It is now a sort of hyperbaric chamber re-growing the bone first, from the inside out. Hopefully this will be done sooner than later!

I thought for the longest time environments where not my thing. Now I find myself doing them more than ever. Who'd a thunk it. This is a shot of a rail station on the outer skirts of our story. It's still kind of rough but like where its going, I think? I plan on sprawling the city out a bit more and giving it some depth as its pretty crude right now.

Finally an environment I am pretty happy with! I definitely gained allot from this one as far as my environment skill set goes. I have never really done an environment this heavy before and feel way more confident in moving forward towards others. The guys at MB had tons of great feedback on this that helped me tramendously. I will probably make a few little tweaks but that's it. More to come!

I finally feel like my environments are catching up. I don't know how I feel about saying this, but I have come to love Maya. After blocking in environments its pretty gratifying to play with camera angles and really push the perspective. After a great critique at the Atelier I think this will be a nice portfolio piece after a few changes.

After working on our transit story for a little while I decided to create a sports car that is incorporated with our story. Actually I have been geeking out over upcoming cars and wanted to make one of my own. This vehicle locks onto the tracks same as the wheel design on the speeder below. This society barley has any open roads and all vehicles revolve around the tracks. I am having allot of fun with this. Will do a couple more variants of this before moving on!

This is a vehicle thumb I am working on for our story Transit. It will be the main characters mode of transportation. It is a repair car that has been slighty fixed up to our characters needs. This is one of a couple thumbs. After I explore some more looks I will take it to finish.

Atelier!

I have decided to go back to school. I have been lucky enough to be accepted into the conceptart.org Atelier school. Thanks to those of you who wrote me up a letter of recommendation. There is tons of talent there, not to mention the guys at massive black. I am learning allot while my mind melts with the immense art knowledge I am taking in. I have been in it for a couple weeks now and will be posting allot of stuff as time goes on.

We have been given the story of Huck Fin, but with our own twist. It takes place a 100 years in the future and have turned the river into a subway system, to give you an idea. My team and I will be concepting every aspect of this story over the next six months. I haven't been this excited about a project in a while. Hopefully in a years time my portfolio will be busting at the seams with concept goodness. Stay tuned.

I have decided to re-work this a bit after a good critique at comic con. But this is where I am at so far.
I chopped the front end so the silhouette reads a little better and through on some detail. I figured this things gona be a little messed up in the front if its capable of going over 300mph. The other day I was pretty happy with where I was at, so I decided to show my fiancé. After sharing my ideas on the bike, I proceeded to let her know what the exhaust would sound like when this things maxing out screaming across the dessert. It was right then when I think she lost interest. Guess I got a little too excited about this lol. If everything goes as planned I will concept the rider for this bike and a separate environment for them pretty soon after.

personal project...

This is a personal project I have started in my spare time last week. It’s about 60% there. My main idea is there, but not sure where I want to take this piece. In my story this will be the main characters mode of transportation. A sci-fi super bike if you will. The character will have made his living on this falling from pro racer to illegal underground racing circuits, but that’s not till later. Bare with me as I’m just thinking out loud.

The bike will have a darker matte finish but am still working out my values and areas of detail. Also was playing around with the idea of these disks that you slide your fingers into, instead of traditional handlebars. Between the disks will be two insertion points where the riders suit will lock onto for a man and machine kind of fit. As it’s still a work in progress any thoughts would be appreciated. Hope to finish this guy in the next couple of weeks?

Environment in Progress....

Haven't posted in a while so here we go. This environment is based on a short story called The Tribes of Bela. Here is a blurb this scene is based on.

skating in toward a cliff covered with a cluster of domes, semiplast storehouses, and connecting corridors like chicken runs. Beneath the clutter lie huge blocks of stone shaped and fitted together like a puzzle. Did I come four-point-something light years to find the Incas have been here before me? "Welcome to Zamok, Colonel," says Captain Mack, expertly bringing us in to a landing on the gray circle of a rain-slick pad.

Its still a work in progress, hense the exposed line work. I also need to do something about that huge tangent dead bottom center!
